Migraine
According to neurologist Paul Louis (de Standaard, 13 September 2007) headache and migraine are discomforts regularly suffered by 24% of the Belgian population.
Like most symptoms, headaches and migraine may have several causes: weather changes, tiredness and tension, hormonal fluctuations, physical efforts, excitement, light, noise, smells, chemicals, medication, certain food products or a missed meal, teeth grinding, arthritis in the neck, wrong position of the jaw, worsening sight, sleep deprivation or a head injury.
The precise biological cause of migraine is still unknown. However, it was found that the blood vessels in the brain are dilated. In 90% of the people suffering from migraine another member of their family also suffers from it.
In my practice as a nutritionist I have experienced that food can play a major role. The susceptibility to migraine can be triggered by “food triggers”. The role of the nutritionist is to detect the triggers together with the patient and prepare a personal dietary plan. By avoiding these food elements migraine and other associated symptoms may be reduced, including muscle pain, gastrointestinal problems, ... and in many cases the amount of medication can be reduced or even discontinued (only upon consultation of the treating physician).
