Sleep disorder
Snoring: some figures
40% to 60% of the Belgian population regularly snores.
Causes
Possible causes of snoring include colds, allergies, overweight, use of alcohol, presence of certain nasal abnormalities or enlarged nose or throat tonsils, smoking, stress or hereditary factors. Sleeping on one’s back and the use of certain medicines such as tranquilizers or sleeping medication may aggravate the problem.
My personal experience
Based on my practical experience I have noticed that food hypersensitivities may affect the sleeping cycle in 3 ways:
- more difficulty falling asleep (especially young people)
- sleep very lightly and waking up from every sound
- sleep 10 to 11 hours and wake up tired
Solutions
If no abnormalities in nose or throat and no IgE mediated allergies are found, the cause of sleeping badly can for some people be attributed to pseudo-allergies. These cannot be detected by means of blood analyses.
The solution lies in a dietary scheme where most “triggers” are removed. What often happens – and that is a nice side effect - is that by eliminating food elements not only the snoring stops, but also a whole range of other symptoms such as night sweats, phlegm in the throat, bad dreams, headache, muscle cramps, joint pains, restless legs and gastrointestinal problems.
